About Omar al-Bashir
Omar al-Bashir (b. 1944) ruled Sudan as President from 1989 until his ouster in 2019 via military coup. His three-decade rule was defined by Islamist governance, civil war, mass atrocities, international sanctions, and deeply entrenched corruption. His legacy remains polarizing given human rights abuses, but he significantly shaped modern Sudan.
